LCDs last longer, but still, you can get a good 12 years out of a Plasma.
LCDs are better for gaming etc, whereas Plasmas are better for movies and television

depends what size tv you want, anything up to 42 inch is better in LCD and cheaper in most caser as LCD is favoured over plasma in development these days, they are brighter and less prone to problems of dead cells.
Arguably over 42 inch you are better off with plasma but i still prefer LCD’s
LCD’s also use about half the electricity of plasmas.

We have a 42″ plasma. We bought our son a 42″ LCD.
For general viewing nothing much either way.
For quality viewing (i.e David Attending wild life filmed in HD for example) the plasma is better as the “blacks” are black (not grey) and the depth of colour is better!
Prices have crashed so Plasmas are only about £100 more now – bearing mind you will have it for 10+ years, for 24p/week it’s worth it!

They both last about the same amount of time!
Plasma’s have the best picture quality out of the HDTV world! They have the highest contrast ratio’s(2,000,000:1 dynamic; 40,000:1 native) and the fastest refresh rates(600hz)!
As for all of the myths about Plasma’s in terms of burn-in & energy use(http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/myths/screen-burn/), all but a thing of the past!
I own a Panasonic Plasma TV and absolutely love it! I highly recommend one!

Plasma TVs are still on the market for two advantages over LCDs:
1. More cost efficient to produce a big size plasma – 42inch and bigger.
2. Plasmas has a higher Color Gamut. Gamut can be defined in this case, as the TVs ability to reproduce the original colors mapped by the source – like the camera.
LCDs:
- Does last longer.
- Does have better refresh rates these days – which is better for games.
- Does have a lower power consumption.
- Does not run the same risk of burned in images.
- Is clearer in a room with lots of natural light.
-etc
But bottom line is – if your walk into a shop with two high end 42inch TVs; one plasma the other LCD. Both displaying the same 1080p HD source. You’ll be more wowed by the picture depth on the Plasma…

I would recommemd LCD over plasma.Picture quality of lcd can not reach plasma but excellent.LCDs are thinner set, less power consumption, not burn-in and last longer.

Plasmas, generally speaking, have better pictures. Burn-in, longevity and power consumption really aren’t an issue. The only time I’d recommend an LCD over a plasma is if you will be watching your TV in a bright room.

LCD if you can’t keep the sunlight out of the room or are on a budget. Plasma otherwise.

Depends what size you want to get. Up to 42″, LCDs are better but 42″ and above, Plasmas are better but the best 37″ TV you can currently buy, is a Panasonic Plasma (WhatHiFi), so its not always the case. Search online on avforums or google to find what’s currently the best in a particular size. Plasma TV’s are very heavy and bulky because they require gas chambers to work, these need to be replaced once the gas inside them runs out. They have a shorter life span than a LCD TV (20 years at 4 h/day vs 40 years at 4 h/day for LCD). Plasmas have better blacks (just) than LCD’s but from personal experience, LCDs are better. LCDs have lower power consumption and all the talk about plasmas having faster refresh rates is nothing, Sony recently released a 200Hz LCD (Z4500) and honestly the difference in 100Hz (standard refresh rate for todays LCDs) and 200Hz is difficult to notice. Truth be told, it all boils down to what TV size you want. Visit
