VHS Tapes Look Lousy On Plasma HDTV

I just got a new 63″ Samsung plasma 1080p HDTV.I played a VHS tape that normally looked good on my old picture tube TV to play in my VCR but it didn’t look as good on the plasma screen.Is this normal? Also some DVD’s of old movies (”The Wild Bunch” for example)Didn’t look all that great either.Will playing those movies on an upcoverting and or upscaling player make any difference?
