How necessary are expensive HDMI cables for a new plasma HDTV?

Going to purchase either a 42 or 50 inch plasma and was wondering what the difference is between some of the cheaper HDMI cables that cost between 30-80$ and the expensive ones which are 130+?

Look on Ebay. Remind yourself that this is transfering digital data. It either makes it or it doesnt. Stay out of the stores and look on line. The stores make a ton of money on these items, dont get ****** in..

typically the more expensive ones are able to pass through more data per second. If you are running a blu-ray hd DVD I would definatly consider getting a good cable so that signal doesnt get compressed when it is being sent to the TV

The difference will be the quality in the picture. If your going with an HD setup, you might as well go all the way. A cheaper cable will still get the job done, but one of the more expensive cables will not only increase the picture quality, but it will last longer too. There would probably be a faster transfer time from your box to your TV but it would be so small, the human eye would not be able to notice it. I would go with the more expensive one. It will set you back more now, but it will be much better in the long run.

The big difference is the material they are made from. The most expensive cable use real gold for the connector and a super quality copper with with a shielding cable, a very flexible polypropylene casing.
The cheap ones are made of molded rubber with fine Gage tinned copper wire, Tin Connector, Which are gold dipped to appear high quality, no shielding on the cable and good for about 1 year.
You will also have one other option that most people over look and that the use of a Digital Light Optic Cable, If you have a digital or Optical Connection on the back of your equipment, this is the best thing to use. The Signal processing is much faster then wire. Einstein theory of light proved that.
They cable too are expensive but worth every penny.
So I guess if you have gone this far, what’s another $150. to get the finest picture possible.

NO DIFFERENCE between cheap and expensive cabling….just buy a nice set of inexpensive cables, or even a well built MID-Priced cable that doesn’t go over $50.
The $120 cables are just trying to sell you on stuff that doesn’t IMPROVE the HDMI signal….
HDMI is digital anyways, so you don’t need to keep those 1’s and 0’s straight and square shaped….you only need to distinguish between 1 and 0…..
