Bought a new Plasma HDTV, now what?

plasma hdtv
thisthingsucks asked:

I bought a new plasma HDTV on BF (well, the day before, but it was a BF deal). It’s the 50″ Vizio plasma. Do I need to buy some cables for it? If so which kind? Do I have to do a ‘burn in’ period on the TV like i’ve heard some places? Anything else I should know? Thanks.

You need some HD content my friend!

Contact you Cable or Satellite operator and look into their HD offerings and make an appointment.

As far as cables are concerned, you can get an HDMI cable to connect between the cable/satellite box and your TV. This “does it all” cable handles all video AND audio in a single cable and offers tip-top performance. But they are still fairly expensive.

You can also getting away with simple component video cables. They are the ones that are bundled in a group of three (Red, Green, Blue). They are fairly cheap and provide almost as good a picture. BUT that will only take care of the picture. You will also need a separate cable(s) for the audio.

This can be accomplished with simple RCA coaxial cables (the type that usually come free with a DVD player) or use of a Digital Coaxial or Digital optical cable. The digital cables offer superior sound, and have come down in price.

    Good luck.

PS, don’t worry about a “burn in period”, what you need to keep in mind is plain old “burn in”. Which is damage caused to a TV screen, usually by the “black bars” created when viewing 4 : 3 aspect ratio content on a 16 : 9 aspect ratio TV screen ( a wide screen HD TV monitor)
